On October 9, 2018, the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRI) will debate the proposal for a regulation on minimum requirements for water reuse.

The European Commission’s proposal was born out of the need to address the issue of water scarcity, drought, climate change, pollution, etc. Thus, the proposal encourages water reuse provided that minimum sanitary and monitoring standards are in place, including food hygiene rules for agricultural products irrigated with reused water.

As a shadow rapporteur, I support this initiative and I think we need to be prepared in time to face the challenges of the future. Water is a vital resource that we have been taking for granted  for too long.
